James Madison, George Washington, Patrick Henry— our founders all agreed—if you don’t want to live under tyrannical government, you must govern yourself. Robert Winthrop, in 1852, said it well: “Men, in a word, must necessarily be controlled, either by a power within them or by a power without them; either by the word of God, or by the strong arm of man; either by the Bible, or by the bayonet.”

Furthermore, our founders thought private property was so important that they created a government that protected property. Property is both internal (our thoughts, ideas, conscience, character) and external (liberties, homes, land and possessions). Our founders believed people had to be virtuous to be free. If we lose our virtue, we’re doomed. Our founders formed a government based on the Scriptures, in particular the principles of government that God gave to the Israelites through Moses.
